Fertile Ground, a jazz-funk band from Baltimore, opens with a supple and powerful Afro-beat number. This is their first new work in two and a half years, with the addition of a new guitarist and a seven-piece lineup consisting of the only vocalist, Navasha Daya, keyboard, two wind instruments, percussion, and drums. The jazzy and funky sound has a deeper level of sophistication, making Navasha's soulful and expressive voice even more appealing. The songs range from Afro to organic soul, medium with spiritual sounds, groovy jazz-funk, reggae-tinged songs, and even poetry readings. All of these elements come together seamlessly and form a single flow, creating a comfortable sound space. This is a work worth listening to, depicting the strength, beauty, and identity of African Americans through songs and performances that convey human warmth.
